Guide: Women Affected by Violence

I am a woman and a victim of violence

Specific Rights for Women Affected by Violence

Are you threatened or affected by forced marriage, violence by your partner, crimes committed in the name of honour, female genital mutilation (FGM/cutting), forced prostitution, or rape? If so, you are entitled to appropriate support.

Violence against women is prohibited in Germany. No one is allowed to beat a woman or force her to do something against her will. Persecution due to your gender and lack of protection from violence and coercion within the family can also be grounds for protection status in the asylum procedure. It is important that you inform them before your asylum interview that you wish to be interviewed by a specially trained officer (special representative). You should present your personal reasons during the interview. You have the right to be interviewed without your husband. In the interview, state clearly that no one – including family members – should be informed of what you have shared.

Your Specific Rights

  • Consideration of gender-specific grounds for persecution in the asylum procedure
  • Option to choose between submitting your own asylum application with personal reasons or a joint family application with your husband
  • Before the asylum interview: express the wish to be interviewed by a woman and to have a female interpreter
  • Safe accommodation for you and your children
  • In cases of domestic violence: women in Germany can live independently and receive financial support for themselves and their children, regardless of their husband
  • And many more
