Guide: Victims of Human Trafficking

I am a victim of human trafficking (was sold, exploited, or similar)

Specific Rights for Victims of Human Trafficking

Have you fled your home country because you became a victim of exploitation? Or did you become a victim of human trafficking while fleeing, in Europe, or in Germany?

Then you have likely experienced one or more of the following situations: your passport was taken from you, you were forced to repay debts, you were locked up and monitored, you were beaten or raped, forced into sexual acts or prostitution, or you were promised things in exchange for staying in Germany (such as a good job or paid training) that were never fulfilled.

Human trafficking refers to situations where a person is brought into exploitation through violence, threats, or deception. It can take many forms, including sexual exploitation, labour exploitation, forced begging and criminal activity, or organ trafficking. Victims of human trafficking are entitled to appropriate support.

Your Specific Rights

  • Consideration of your experiences of human trafficking in your country of origin during the asylum procedure
  • Interview in the asylum procedure by a special representative for victims of human trafficking, or later involvement of such a representative
  • At least a 3-month reflection and stabilisation period after a rejected asylum application, to decide whether you are willing to testify in criminal proceedings against those responsible for the trafficking. Afterwards, a one-year residence permit may be granted, which can also be extended
  • Medical treatment and psychological support
  • Safe accommodation and protective measures in cases of acute danger, if you became a victim of human trafficking in Germany
